Meet Pam and Nick Austin originally from Stamford in Lincolnshire. They have just agreed the sale of their beautiful 3 bed Uzumlu property so they can free up time to head to Australia and the Far East on a two year long adventure. In our latest case study, we ask them how they found the property sales process in Turkey from a vendors perspective. They let us know what prompted them to sell, suggest a few tips for others looking to sell their Turkish properties, and let us know a little about their exciting plans for the future;
What made you originally purchase a property in Turkey?
“We brought our first property in Turkey 12 years ago, an apartment in Ovacik near Oludeniz. We knew back then we wanted an overseas property and had researched Spain and Portugal but they weren’t for us. Pam saw a TV show on properties in Turkey and suggested we come and take a look. We did, and within 2 hours of arriving, a local Fethiye estate agent had us sitting in a traditional village restaurant in Uzumlu, surrounded by beautiful mountains and countryside, eating tandir and drinking local wine. We thought “wow” this is exactly what we are looking for!
The ex-pat lifestyle is something you couldn’t enjoy in the UK, the climate simply won’t allow it
Uzumlu back then was a little quiet so we opted for Ovacik, near Oludeniz. We liked it there but fell in love with Turkey and wanted to spend more time here. The idea of spending six months a year here, the other six in the UK really appealed. The ex-pat lifestyle is something you couldn’t enjoy in the UK, the climate simply won’t allow it. We found that our apartment, although on a small complex, didn’t offer the privacy we wanted if staying long term – don’t buy an apartment, buy a villa if you possibly can. Apartments are great if you’re only using your property in Turkey as a holiday home or renting it out, but if you intend living in the area and want your own space, buy a villa! This is why we sold up our first property in Turkey and brought our villa in Uzumlu nine years ago. We loved it there, and still do but times change.”
What prompted your decision to sell your Uzumlu home?
“Let’s just say we are closer to 70 rather than 60, we want to see more of life whist we are still able. Our daughter now lives in Australia and, having visited her, we now want to travel. We want to spend some time in Oz and then explore the Far East and Asia. We like travelling and, although we have loved our property in Turkey, we were spending too much time there. We now want to free that time up to see other places. We will miss it though and did experience mixed emotions when we first accepted the offer but now we’re excited about what the future may hold.”
Why did you choose Oceanwide Properties as the estate agent to handle your sale?
“Oceanwide Properties was recommended to us by a friend. We met Suleyman Akbay and the girls and felt comfortable with them. They seemed professional, we spoke over the options and opted for their sole agency agreement. It was free, we were represented on an exclusive basis, and we benefited from their full marketing activities. We listed out property last September, at the end of summer, had many viewings and now the sale is going through. We are happy to recommended Oceanwide to others we know that are selling their properties in the area”.
Do you have any tips for vendors looking to sell their property in Turkey?
“We have brought and sold a lot of houses over the years and found that if you don’t present your property well in photos and when buyers come to view, people will just walk away. Make sure you take lots of good photos painting the picture and lifestyle on offer to the people. No-one wants to see a cluttered kitchen or your dirty linen strewn around. Pictures are very important.”
Oceanwide Properties wish to thank Pam and Nick for sharing their story with us. We wish them the best of luck with their up and coming adventures and hope they stay in touch with us here in Turkey.
